Bario Valley Trek

Bario in Kelabit Highlands lies at an elevation of 1000 metres, well above the steamy jungle covered coastal plain. The mountain surrounding this highland reaches up to over 2000 metres, which make for chilly evenings. The Kelabit people are among Borneo's best rice farmers, the fragrant 'highland rice' is much sought.

Bario is a staging point for highland treks and mountain expeditions. Sarawak's highest peak, Gunung Murud (2454 m) lies within a three-day hike of Bario. Hike at the highlands and meet the hill tribes, Lun Bawang and Kelabit. Visit their longhouse and experience the real life of the highlanders.

It is customary to leave a contribution to the household or village, and it is also a good idea to bring gifts (i.e., food, tobacco, rice, salt, etc) to give the village headman/host when you first arrive.

The highlands lie in the centre of the mountainous region of Borneo, on the border of Sarawak and Kalimantan, and the montane basin is found between two taller mountain ranges (the Tambu Range, in Sarawak and Apo Duat Range, in Kalimantan).

This place is also a favourite optional trip for those keen on jungle trekking; with no roads in or out of Bario, you have to go as everyone else does - on foot! The cooler climate and hilly landscape combined with the friendliness of the people make this a memorable trip.

Indeed, one of Sarawak's best-kept secrets that offers lots of adventure to the nature seekers.

The only access to Bario is by air on MAS. Bario’s airstrip is very small and because of its position, flights are often cancelled because of mist and clouds. Plane connections are with Miri and Marudi.
